Lyndale Road Race - Carline reporting

Lyndale Road Race (June 12, 2012)

Conditions:  Windy, Sunny, and Buggy if not moving fast enough

Upon my arrival, infrequent Pete was the only rider at the site – this instantly caused a panic that we most likely missed some information about a course change.  To our relief, Jimbo showed up followed by Ed.

The four Rotts prepared for the first road race of the year – Lyndale Course (measuring at 60,000 ft~11.4 miles per proportional extrapolation from Mapquest).  Jimbo verbally explain that he has just placed 5 sprint flags on the course but his body language said, ‘without Steve, John B, and George here, I plan on winning all 5 sprints and you can’t do anything about it’.  With that the four Rotts were off to the races with - at least for me - a singular goal of preventing Jimbo from clean sweep of all the sprints.

Race started with a strong headwind and at a casual pace.  At the uphill first flag, none could challenge Jimbo’s sprint prowess and John and Ed was left fighting for second with John nipping Ed.

Casual pace continued and at the slow inclining second flag, again none could match Jim and Ed and John was left for second with Ed nipping John.  Pete evidently was strategizing to take the back half.

Causal pace continued toward the roundabout and with half mile to go, John took off with dreams of separation and backwind at the turn to help maintain it.  The separation was maintained for the next 2 miles and unbeknownst to John through the 3rd flag.  Bit further, the 3 rider peloton sprinted past John which again unbeknownst to John must have been the 4th flag.

The group stayed together as they headed towards the last flag on the apex of the largest hill.  As the group approached the hill Jimbo noted that ‘this is a challenging hill and we’ll see who has the legs for it’ (i.e. ‘you ain’t got nuttin’).  With that Jimbo and Pete took off for the flag and evidently Pete did not do enough strategizing to prevent Jimbo from taking the final flag.

                      Finish  Hill     #1       #2       #3       #4       #5       Total Points
Jimbo             9                    3         3         1         3         3         22
Pete               10                   -          -         2         1         2         15
John               8                    2         1         3          -          1         15
Ed                  7                    1         2          -          2         -          12

Editors note:  Mr. Carline's report indicates that Jim beat Pete at the finish.   This mistake is understandable since Mr. Carline was a zip code behind the top finishers.  The points have been corrected.

Retro Hill Killer - Dan Klima

Temp:  86 F
Winds: Light and variable

Nine Racin’ Rotts lined up at the bottom of the Great Hill to recreate the race of yesteryear:  The Retro Hill Killer.  Faced with possible passers-by, Head Out Early Hoky set the stage by leaving before the other Rotts even lined up.  The remaining Rotts waited as Jammin’ Jim patiently described the start and end points (or did he really say he didn’t give a sh*t if no one was listening to him?)

Head Out was later heard to say “This course is far more preferable to the New Hill Killer and might give me hope of passing Speed Demon, especially since he didn’t meet his personal goal of a sub-14 minute Retro Ride.”

10 pts               Speed Demon Schoo                        14:35
9 pts                 Crankin’ Carline                                  15:35

2 pts                 First Time Tim                                       18:12

[ed] An adjustment was made to Jammin Jim's time to accommodate his use of a retro sun dial watch for time rather than a more modern cycling computer.

5/29 Medina Angina Results - Schoo Report

Scott is 2 for 2 with decisive win in Medina:
(Nicknaming for Scott and Andrea is open for ideas/discussion)

Coming off last weeks win on the Iron Butterfly - Scott continued his winning ways in Medina this week.  On a blustery day with threatening clouds, 8 Rotts gathered to fight the 58 degree temperature, and the 20 mph winds out of the West.

Actually there were only 7 riders at the start, as Scott was only "a threat" to show up (as he sent his wife ahead to warn the already anxious group of riders).  Just a mere 1:15 before his departure time - he confidently skidded up to next to Ranger Barten - the last of the riders in the start gate at that point - and asked for directions.

Up the road a little ways, all the other riders were resting their chins on the areobars, trying their best to get beneath the battering headwind.   Schoo for one could not help smiling - thinking of areobar-less Barten sitting upright like a sheet of plywood in the wind.   This wind had to be to his advantage he thought...

As the stories have it...Schoo eventually passed the Craiginator just before reaching Medina, and fought the passback all the way to the finish.  Scott was able to pass Barten on the downhill after the cemetary - but Barten rallied for a passback on the subsequent climb.  The rally was short lived, as Scott once again took the lead for good on the next decent.

When the ride ended, Scott dominated, and Schoo barley held on to 2nd place over the areobar-less Barten.  Klima was headed to drown his sorrows in an alcoholic beverage of his choice, while Hokie quickly departed (without providing a time) to dump overflowing wheelbarrows, so the cash machine could continue to flow.   Barten complained of being in 3rd place again if the new guy Scott continued to show - asking Schoo how he could do such a thing as to invite fast people?

It's all part of a bigger strategy...as I'm proud to announce that Team General Mills tied the race this week...26 to 26!!!

The best we can gather - the results are as follows:

10 pts - Scott Meyers 38:26
9 pts- Schoo Schoo 39:24
8 pts - Ranger Barten 39:51
7 pts - Craiginator 41:50
6 pts - Andrea Meyers 43:36
5 pts? - Klima 47:37
4 pts? - Hokie ???
3 pts? - Kate 55:33

Iron Butterfly - Results from Kate

Results:  Iron Butterfly
May 22, temp. 82 degress F  winds 15-20 , 27% humidity

The Rottweelers welcomed two new riders on a perfect evening for riding:
  • not too hot, not too cold,
  • not too humid,
  • tail winds only,
  • no gnats for the post-race chatter,
  • no one caught by the police for failure to stop, and
  • everyone followed the course to perfection
Debate and consternation followed posting of the results when it was found there was a potential tie for second place.   The calibration of timing mechanisms was reviewed with less than conclusive outcome.  Race committee determined that ties for Iron Butterfly go oldest.

1. Scott      24.23
2. John B    25.01
3. Steve      25.01
4. Andrea    26.42
5. John C    26.45
6. Ed          27.38
7. Jim         28.26
8. John H.   28.38
9. Dan K.    30:15
10. Kate       35.05

Dan Klima report

Arriving after the true Rotts had finished, I decided to renew my fond memories of Iron Butterfly torture.  For the warm-up, John H. took me on a grueling 13 mile romp through the park trail system, often reaching speeds of 15 mph.  After a short breather, I straddled the Plastic Pony and headed off into the still gusting wind.

Thanks to the Tuesday Night TT guys, I was able to get passed twice on Co 24 to add to the realism of an actual Rott Ride.  Seeing photographers and the Medina Police stopping traffic brought me back to reality.  Figuring the MedCops were busy, I blew through the stop sign, saving precious seconds.

As I turned the corner to the Two Saints Cemetery, I felt inclined to look for open grave sites.  Not seeing any within sight of the road, I kept going.  Topping Brown’s Mound made me think of circling back to the cemetery and doing a more thorough search.

The rest of the ride was less notable, mostly because I was so focused on air deprivation.  After all that fun, my final time was 30:15 (sorry Kate).

See ya’ll later, maybe….

Danny Boy

Editors notes:
  • Had Craig and Pat shown up team Cheerios with their new recruits could likely have ended their victory drought.   As it was they were once again drubbed 30-25.

Elm Creek Time Trial - 5/15 - (John Carline)

Under the beautiful sunny sky, four rotts gathered to take on the 11 mile Elm Creek mountain bike trails.  We lost Kate before the race as lacking turtles in these trails she found two-legged beings needing help placing boulders on the trails.  The remaining three started off on the fairly sparse trails.

J Barten started off as the rabbit with J Smith and J Carline dreaming of a rabbit stew for dinner.  Before any could say 'what's up doc', the minute was up and J Carline gave chase followed by J Smith.  In the end that wascally wabbit excape with nearly a sniff and we were left with a flat (Smith) and the exhilarating experience of maneuvering through the sharp turns and narrow passages.

Times:
J Barten - 56:00
J Smith - 1:01:00
J Carline - 41:33 (ex. 3 mile Grizzlyland loop)

Results - Hell of Greenfield II

Comment from Mr. Barten:
“ The race lived up to pre-event hype, riders got to experience mud, grass, gravel, grit, blood, sweat and tears on a wonderful evening with perfect riding conditions.  Plans are to make the Hell of Greenfield III even longer and harder, continuously increasing the punishment inflicted on the participants until more riders show up.”

Results From Mr. Ed:
Hell of Greenfield II May, 8, 2012
Longer, harder and more confusing. Indeed.

Temp 63, wind 5mph from the north.

Ride summary
Barten played it cool and rode at a slightly more relaxed pace for the mountain bike segment then upped the speed when he saw Matthiesen making a move on the first gravel out-and-back.  Smith was the nice guy and stayed close to Ed in case he had another chain break.  But you know what they say about nice guys.  The only one crying at the end was Matthiesen who was foamed up like a rabid dog.  Kate got a little closer to doing the actual course.

Results
Barten aka The Delano Wind 1hr 0min 38 sec
Matthiesen aka Chainman 1hr 3 min 22sec
