8/21/2012 - Hill Killer

Beatiful evening for a ride, 77 degrees F, minimal wind from the NE, not much humidity, few bugs.

Traffice report.  In addition to the always interesting corner of 24 and 19, Bob got into a traffic jam when a police car coming from the opposite direction caused cars to pull over into the bike lane.  Big traffic jam from 2 haywagons on the third leg.  Not sure who all was affected.

With the three top contenders within 8 seconds of each other, and Ed, Bob within a second of each other, there was much discussion of the exact location of the finish line.  Wild speculation about what each dog could have done differently to change those precious seconds.

8/14/2012 - Elm Creek Mountain Bike TT

Elm Creek mountain bike TT results:

After three consecutive rainouts, the absence of Mr. Smith apparently kept the trail dry for the final Rott mountain bike time trial of the year at Elm Creek.  Although rain threatened, it was a wonderful evening for biking.  As the Dog’s lined up to weave their way through 12 miles of trees, grass and dirt, the excitement was palpable.  Constant Kate elected to ride the 8 mile loop, so The Only John, faced Nobody leading the way, and Nobody following him.  “Nobody was really looking strong at the start line, but my legs felt good, so I liked my chances” stated Only John.  Waiting the requisite 1 minute, Only John, started out fast determined to chase down Nobody.  A few minutes later Kate also headed out also chasing Nobody.

“My strategy was to stay ahead of Nobody and ride under control through the bike grabbing trees in the Grizzlyland section of the course and then hammer for home” stated Only John after the race.  “That strategy worked to perfection as I caught Nobody in the open area, and was able to pull away from Nobody without even working hard.  Nobody really gave it a great effort, but I was just too strong tonight.   It is sure a lot more fun totally beating Nobody than getting thumped by John C in the TOM.”

Meanwhile, Kate was totally dominating her competition and completely left Nobody in her dust.  “I rode a smart race tonight, and was able to catch and pass Nobody without any difficulty” reported a smiling Kate after the race.

The final results were as follows:

8 mile course

Kate                       55:30                     10 points
Nobody else      DNF

12 mile course:

Only John            56:32                     10 points
Nobody                DNF

Tour of Medina - Stage Comments

Stage 3
It was another beautiful night for the last race of the 2012 TOM!  Temps in the mid 70's and the Nor' easter still blowing about 15 - 20 mph...hardly noticeable to this group of strong riders.  The last stage of the Tour finds the field dwindling to only 5 riders, with Kamaro Kate running the circuit in the mid-day before the wind or traffic began interfering with her blazing speed.  Fast John finds work to pinch him from both ends as he is unable to ride and gives up a sure Silver medal.  Never Rides Bob also misses the race and possible Bronze, not even able to muster a poor excuse!

The remaining four Rott's lined up to tackle the most important race of the Tour, the Hill Killer.  With Crankin' Carline in a solid lead, Slow John didn't even have to wish a flat tire on him as he sees the Silver in his grasp.  Director Dan does wish a flat on both of his "rivals", being especially pleased to see Slow J leave all his tire repair gear on the rock wall.  Timboree Tim looked to be a strong contender with his now found biking shorts, but had a substantial time difference that seemed difficult to close on the short, hilly course.  Perhaps that is why he rushed to the line to assure his first rider position, his pockets spilling roofing nails as he sprinted from the gates.  His valiant effort was not wasted as he pursued the coveted Copper Medal.

The results will be now entered in the annals of sporting history, adding to an already impressive medal showing for the US at the summer Olympics.

Stage 2

Another beautiful day for a race!  Temps in the upper 70’s and only a hint of the fabled nor’ easter with winds around 20 mph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nor'easter).  Once again, only 7 real Rott’s showed up for the festivities.  As expected, the outcome was a replay of Stage 1 with Crankin’ Carline leading the pack as the John’s take the top four spots.  Only Never Ride Bob prevents a podium finish for the slowest John.

Today’s recap will be light, as the Director has been directed to stick to his corporate responsibilities.  The now-found formatted spreadsheet is attached.

Thanks to Kamaro Kate for letting the Director know he left his front wheel laying the parking lot!

Stage 1
Turn-out was low for Stage 1 of the 2012 TOM.  Several riders were suspected to have work excuses, one planned a vacation (some commitment to this event!), and one didn’t want to have tired legs for some weekend family touring (Dairyland Dare?).  Others didn’t even bother sending a lame excuse.  Only 7 riders gathered at the starting line when the gun went off.

Conditions were grueling with temps in the 85 C range and winds almost noticeable.  Fast John C. raised the “obvious” question:  Do we stop at the stop signs during this First Stage?  Kate, having been last year’s recipient of a Medina invitation to either a fine or court date, pointed out the numerous black and white vehicles roaming the roads.  So the motion carried:  all riders were to come to a complete stop and put one foot on the pavement before briskly proceeding.   That decision proved quite smart when Second Fast John B., along with Timboree Tim and Director Dan, stopped at the Medina Rd stop sign to wait for the Medina Paddy Wagon.  SFJB was later heard to say “I surely would have run that stop sign and have collected a ticket, if not for the clear thinking of FJC.”  Note:  Director Dan always stops at all stop signs to prevent last year’s issue with Medina’s Finest.

Results of this Stage 1 race are below, along with some very inspiring comments.  As soon as the Director locates the pre-formatted spreadsheet, the results will be properly placed for future generations to envy.

7/31/2012 Lyndale Road Race

"I've never seen so many tired big names in the Tour de France.  These fellows have all tried and have been destroyed"  Phil Liggett, July 30, 2000  (Insert Lyndale road race for TdF)

"Another perfect day of racing in Lyndale if your name is Barten.  The wind and temperature made these men challenge the course that broke lesser men, and of these there are some lesser men."  Ed Matthiesen, July 31, 2012

"Riding like the wind, Hinault is producing an attack never seen since the Halycon days of Eddie Merckx, the legendary Belgian who make a habit of achieving the impossible.  LeMond knows now that his friend at the dinner table is his rival on the road."  Phil Liggett, 1986 TdF  (Insert any name below with Hinault and any other name below with LeMond.)

"He looked at the gages on the power plant and saw that the engine could deliver no more.”   Mental thought when that devil-man of a rider Barten had crept into Matthiesen’s slip stream." Matthiesen 200m from the finish, July 31, 2012, Lyndale road race.

I updated the point totals for all races through last week.

Jim

Luce Line for fun and points

With all the mountain bike trails closed for the day because of the rains the Single Speed Championships were postponed and a pseudo gravel tune up ride was arranged.

Jim, John B., and Ed showed up and rode varying distances since Jim rode from home, Ed rode from work, and John drove.

Not wanting to do any math it was decided that 10 points each would be appropriate.

Lyndale Lolly Pallooza

Lyndale Lolly-pallooza

Temp: 92
Wind:  Strong Headwind
Distance: 30 miles (unless you are Ed)
Heat Index: 99 .

Three by car and one by bike, four rotts showed up in 99 degree heat index for the inaugural longest ride of the rotts history - Lyndale Lolly.  Sure there was talk about reducing the distance, but it was brief and we would have none of that.

Ed started it off followed by Jim, John C and John Barton as clean-up.  Course layout allowed multiple opportunities to gage the distance at turnaround - not always a good thing when someone is tracking you down.

At the first turnaround in Delano, Ed was riding hard and had added separation from Jim as John C closed in with John B not far behind.

At the second turnaround in Watertown, Ed was still going strong maintaining the separation followed by John C and John B right behind.  Jim having biked in for the ride was starting to feel it at this point.

Heading back toward Lyndale, similar to the economy, the riders had strong headwind with multiple hills to climb.  All struggled as John B passed John C and was making ground on Ed.

As the group passed the Lyndale church for the last loop, John B had Ed within his sights and was salivating to finish off the last pass.  Ed on the other hand had other plans.  On the first turn, Ed went straight thus avoiding being passed and leaving John B confused and muttering 'what kind of trickery is this'.  In the end, the extra 30min ride was worth it for Ed.

Rider        Time        Points
John B    1:28:49        10
John C    1:31:03        9
Ed           1:31:04*     8     *Valiant effort, but still likely 1 second short.
Jimbo      1:39:00       7

Uno Dos Tres Quatros Killer

A perfect evening for the dogs to attack the legendary slopes of Baker.

Tension mounted as the pack members evaluated the optimal number of rounds to provide a tactical advantage.  This was complicated by the consideration that no one really knew how the scoring works.
Finally, John C. broke and started with others in the pack following.

Welcome to new person, Karl, (And Tom, who we missed in the original post)

Temperature 84 degrees F. Winds 6 mph constant tailwind from all directions for all riders.  ( a miracle of the Baker topography and Rottweeler race directors).

"I'm with Stupid" Mountain Bike Time Trial

July 3rd, hot, humid, buggy.

Given the weather conditions (heat index 105 degrees) it was decided that a warm up lap to loosen up was probably a good idea followed by a sprint lap for time.

The riders were split into two heats based on enthusiasm.

In the "This is fun" heat it was the old dog Barton battling the young pup Carline.

In the "I'm with Stupid" heat it was the two middle aged guys trying to find a speed that would require the least amount of effort to keep upright and ahead of the mosquitos.

"This is fun" Heat Final Results
Barton 17:19
Carline 17:38

"I'm with Stupid" Heat Final Results
Matthiesen 21:13
Smith 21:18

All participants then gathered at the Matthiesen Mansion for Brats, burgers, beer, chips, veggies, Rice Krispy bars, and then some more beer.

Next race is the quad killer on Tuesday.

Age Adjusted Rolling Rambler

Results below for the age adjusted rolling rambler.   Darla Delange provided the timing.     Thanks!

It wouldn't be a time trial without some level of timing controversy involving Mr. Carline.    After some haggling the controversy was solved when someone said "well it's pretty easy to tell which time belonged to which rider if you go by the order they finished in".   Mr. Carline's gambit to overtake Mr. Smith fell 3 seconds short this time.

Once the spreadsheet was mastered and the math settled, Geezer Gary and Geriatric John B dominated the field.  Unfortunately neither could stay for the picnic to celebrate their victory.   Unlike the rest of us they didn't have passes to stay out of the assisted living center past 7PM.    Or, more likely they saw an opportunity to clean up at bingo with the diminished field because of the picnic.

Kate added a twist to age adjustment by also doing a separate ride calling for a math course adjustment.

Grill Master Klima rose to the grilling challenge and guided Mr. Smith through the intricacies of how raw food becomes cooked.   It was quite educational for Mr. Smith who seemed to have trouble grasping the concept until he saw it play out.   Hopefully at the next picnic the grill master will continue to close the loop with a demonstration on how live animals become raw food.

Bob seems to be getting faster but claims he is riding less (actually not riding at all).   Seems counterintuitive, but worth a try.

Pete seems to be quickly getting back in shape and had the top raw time.    Had he been 19 years older he would have beat Gary.

Tim noted the drop off in attendance due to the move to Tuesdays.   It was brought to everyone's attention that Tuesday's Children (Ed and Steve) were not at the ride.   A mid season move of the rides back to Wednesday is under consideration.

Oh yeah, Frosted Flakes 54, Cheerios 0, we call that a shutout where I come from.

Let's do this again.  Somehow I brought home more and better beer than I started with even after giving some to Klima.   Thanks Pete.....  I think.

Elm Creek Mountain Bike next Tuesday.

Thanks!

Jim

Lyndale Road Race - Carline reporting

Lyndale Road Race (June 12, 2012)

Conditions:  Windy, Sunny, and Buggy if not moving fast enough

Upon my arrival, infrequent Pete was the only rider at the site – this instantly caused a panic that we most likely missed some information about a course change.  To our relief, Jimbo showed up followed by Ed.

The four Rotts prepared for the first road race of the year – Lyndale Course (measuring at 60,000 ft~11.4 miles per proportional extrapolation from Mapquest).  Jimbo verbally explain that he has just placed 5 sprint flags on the course but his body language said, ‘without Steve, John B, and George here, I plan on winning all 5 sprints and you can’t do anything about it’.  With that the four Rotts were off to the races with - at least for me - a singular goal of preventing Jimbo from clean sweep of all the sprints.

Race started with a strong headwind and at a casual pace.  At the uphill first flag, none could challenge Jimbo’s sprint prowess and John and Ed was left fighting for second with John nipping Ed.

Casual pace continued and at the slow inclining second flag, again none could match Jim and Ed and John was left for second with Ed nipping John.  Pete evidently was strategizing to take the back half.

Causal pace continued toward the roundabout and with half mile to go, John took off with dreams of separation and backwind at the turn to help maintain it.  The separation was maintained for the next 2 miles and unbeknownst to John through the 3rd flag.  Bit further, the 3 rider peloton sprinted past John which again unbeknownst to John must have been the 4th flag.

The group stayed together as they headed towards the last flag on the apex of the largest hill.  As the group approached the hill Jimbo noted that ‘this is a challenging hill and we’ll see who has the legs for it’ (i.e. ‘you ain’t got nuttin’).  With that Jimbo and Pete took off for the flag and evidently Pete did not do enough strategizing to prevent Jimbo from taking the final flag.

                      Finish  Hill     #1       #2       #3       #4       #5       Total Points
Jimbo             9                    3         3         1         3         3         22
Pete               10                   -          -         2         1         2         15
John               8                    2         1         3          -          1         15
Ed                  7                    1         2          -          2         -          12

Editors note:  Mr. Carline's report indicates that Jim beat Pete at the finish.   This mistake is understandable since Mr. Carline was a zip code behind the top finishers.  The points have been corrected.

Retro Hill Killer - Dan Klima

Temp:  86 F
Winds: Light and variable

Nine Racin’ Rotts lined up at the bottom of the Great Hill to recreate the race of yesteryear:  The Retro Hill Killer.  Faced with possible passers-by, Head Out Early Hoky set the stage by leaving before the other Rotts even lined up.  The remaining Rotts waited as Jammin’ Jim patiently described the start and end points (or did he really say he didn’t give a sh*t if no one was listening to him?)

Head Out was later heard to say “This course is far more preferable to the New Hill Killer and might give me hope of passing Speed Demon, especially since he didn’t meet his personal goal of a sub-14 minute Retro Ride.”
